Concentrate on the future - Leave your past alone

December 12th, 2008

Your past needs to be left alone and not bought with you into your present if you are working towards creating a better life for yourself. Your past never has to be an indication of all you can do in the future, unfortunately for many people this is not the case, they give life to their past by constantly thinking about it in their minds and so in some way it does get in the way of the actions they take in the present moment.

Don’t waste time doing this, as much as possible plan all that is to be in your future, and spend your time focusing in the steps that you need to take now for it all to happen. The more you do this the greater your chance of success will be.

There are many great things about to happen in your future which deserve your attention and your time, and it is this which you should be devoting your actions to in this present moment.

If you have beliefs about certain things not happening in the future because they have not happened in the past, then understand that they should not be given any life in your present and certainly not in your future? Don’t spend time dwelling on what has or hasn’t happened in your life up until this current point where you find yourself.

Become more optimistic about your future, get excited about all the good things you will get to do and all the new things you will learn. You can have the life you want, but you have to stop thinking about you past.

It is important to adopt an attitude of ‘anything is possible’ for your life and it is equally important to leave the unproductive thoughts behind. An attitude of ‘I am the way I am, and that is how it will always be’ won’t help to move your life forward. Neither will ‘I’ve never been good at this before, what makes now so different’?

If you are planning on changing your life then all these attitudes need to be left behind. Instead of focusing your attention on the past, choose to focus it on creating new realities for yourself now.

With the actions you take each day you are creating a new history for yourself, become aware of this and do not underestimate the affects of even the tiniest action you take in this present moment.

“Your future history is being created right now, this minute.”

Start facing up to truths about who is responsible for your future. It is only the actions you take now that will ever dictate what will happen in your future. You can make something happen for yourself, believe this possible and accept no statements to the contrary. The only person who can ever get in your way of making something good happen for yourself is you.

This is your time, your reality and your life. Don’t live in somebody else’s shoes, your life is your responsibility and no one else’s.

Dreaming

November 20th, 2008

Are you a dreamer or are you somebody believes that your future has already been written in stone and that your fate is down to genetics? Maybe you believe that dreaming is just simply wishful thinking, if you do you are only half right. Because dreaming is good for you, it can stimulate your brain to go into the future and visualize amazing new life situations for yourself. Of course another ingredient is needed and that is action, but dreaming in itself is a good activity to be engaged in as long as you understand that it alone won’t get you what you want. Never just accept your life as it is, especially if it is not what you want for yourself. This attitude will never help you, it is defeatist. Instead always choose to imagine what is possible in your life. Dare to dream that your life could be so much greater than it is at the present moment.

Don’t ever let your age or your current job act as limits to where you can be in the future. There are many obstacles that people face in their lives that are imposed on them by themselves; age and current job are two of them. Always continue to grow, develop and learn new things in your life. You never finish evolving and you never reach a certain age when things will never be different, we are all work in progress, there are ways in which everybody can improve on themselves. Appreciate what you have but understand you can always have more.

“We are all better than we know, if only we can be bought to realize this, we may never again be prepared to settle for anything less.”

Kurt Hahn ‘Founder of Outward bound.’

Never accept for yourself a life that’s anything less than what you desire the most. Don’t be like 99% of people who just accept their life as it is, and that it can never be changed, or that you should just be happy with what you have got even if it isn’t what you want. If your life now is not something you dreamed about when you were younger, you are not living the dream and so you need to ask yourself why?

Be Special, don’t be average - Accept nothing but the best

November 18th, 2008

Ninety nine percent of people out there settle for what they perceive to be an ‘OK’ life for themselves, they aren’t really rich but then again they aren’t poor, they have achieved some things but also failed to achieve other things. These people have accepted their lot and have settled on being average. People who are average and who have settled for mediocrity in their life are not the most inspiring people, and the worst thing of all is that they don’t want you to succeed; they want you to be like them. It makes them feel better knowing that you are on the same level as they are.

Let’s face it not everyone will succeed in life, some people simply don’t want to succeed, maybe they believe it is easier for them to just stay as they are, these sort of people always offer excuses as to why they won’t get what they want or succeed in life.

They come up with excuses such as…

  • They say they are too old (if only they were 10 years younger)
  • Too many bills to pay
  • Lack of time
  • Destiny has already been planned for them
  • Family commitments
  • Success requires a lot of money to start with
  • Lack of a good education
  • No influential friends who can help them out

Why do so many people settle for mediocrity like it was some destiny already planned for them?

99% will not bother to create change in their lives. Why is this? Who knows? They are content with being average just like everybody else. Maybe some people don’t believe they can achieve success, or perhaps they believe that they don’t even deserve it.

Be special and different, never make excuses and never accept anything less than the best for your life.

“There is nothing with which everyman is so afraid as getting to know how enormously much he is capable of doing and becoming.”

An amazing life

It is a sad fact of life but go getters and successful people are the minority, pathetic, average and weak people are the majority.

There are many people in this world who are living lives well below what they could be living. They are average people leading average lives simply because they don’t believe it is possible for them to live any other way.

For example let’s say person A has a goal to make one million in 3 years, and person B has a goal to make $100,000 in 3 years. Neither goal is easy although at first glance it may appear that person A’s goal is much harder and will take more effort, the reality is both goals are equally as hard, they will take an equal amount of effort from both people if they are to be successful. The mind will take you wherever you want to go, it will focus on whatever you want to focus on. The difference is that person B only believes he will only be able to make a certain amount and no more, both people are correct in what they believe for themselves, which is why it is so important to think big, thinking small isn’t worth the effort.

“Under achievers are some of the hardest workers around, their problem comes not from their ability to take action, it comes from their inability to set big enough goals and a lack of belief they will achieve them.”

Don’t be someone who under achieves in life, the world already has enough people like this. A lack of ambition will not help you get what you want in life, life can be very different for you, and the first step to leading an amazing life is to not settle for mediocrity.

If you are confident you can achieve any goal you set for yourself and have the self belief and motivation to go make something happen for yourself, don’t let the size of your goal be a limitation for you. Think big, think better, think beyond your wildest imagination, get excited, believe and go out and show the world you have what it takes to turn your dream into a reality.

Words for contemplation

August 8th, 2008

“We are formed and molded by our thoughts. Those whose minds are shaped by selfless thoughts give joy when they speak or act. Joy follows them like a shadow that never leaves them.” - The Buddha

“Inner darkness, which we call ignorance, is the root of all suffering. The more inner light that comes, the more darkness will diminish. This is the only way to achieve salvation or nirvana.” - The 14th Dalai Lama

Don’t get discouraged

April 23rd, 2008

Always keep on going!

Remember just as every tree starts out as a seed, any ideas or plans you have will initially be just like that seed, the difference is that the seed will never get discouraged and neither should you.

  • Every business started out with no customers
  • Every marathon runner started running a few hundred metres at first
  • Every eBay power seller started with one feedback
  • Every actor looked a fool and made mistakes in the beginning
  • Every great sportsman has been beaten many times
  • Every great painting was once just a single brush stroke
  • Every blog starts out with no posts or comments
  • Every website started out with no visitors
  • Nobody was born with business skills they can be learned
  • Every musician started out sounding bad and out of tune
  • Every great guitarist started out learning the basics

In the beginning whenever you start anything new in life the main point to remember is to not get discouraged and to always keep on going.

Don’t ever be lost

March 22nd, 2008

I’m not talking about being in the woods and not knowing your way out, although it could be used as an analogy. What I mean here is don’t ever be without a roadmap of where it is you are going or where you want to get to. If you don’t have that then you are lost and when you’re lost it is very easy to drift or become a drifter, and the unfortunate thing about drifting is that it almost always leads to a place called nowhere.

It is always important to be focused on what you want, but if you are not yet sure of what that is then it is just as important to be focused on something, even if it is not for the long term.

And it may be that you will never ever know what you want to do with your life, this is OK, there are probably many interesting people that never knew what they wanted to do with their lives. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have focus in your life.

For example, say you don’t want to work for somebody else but you know you want to get rich, then always stay focused on the ‘getting rich’ part. And don’t dwell on the fact that you are not focused on working for somebody else.

Another problem with ‘being lost’ is thinking too much, which in itself can be like walking in a maze, going around in circles and never finding the exit.

I am very guilty of this, and take it from me, it really is no fun at all, especially when you add some extra negativity into the mix.

There are ways to think that can lead to creativity and new ideas, there is also a way of thinking that can lead to very dark alleys and huge roadblocks, which is the kind of thinking I am talking about here, a type of thinking that is best avoided.

If you do start to think too much, a good thing to do is to start focusing on things that you do have in your life. We almost always have more than we know in our lives, even if we think sometimes that we don’t and occasionally get lost in our own thoughts.

But getting back to being lost, you should always know what you want, even if it is an extra $200 a month to help with the bills, reminding yourself of this will always be better than saying ‘I don’t know what I want’.

If you have an idea of something you want to do in the short term but perhaps not in the long term, stick with it, being focused in the short term will probably stimulate more ideas than admitting you are lost and don’t know what to do.

I am not sure if you can wander aimlessly through life and just sort of hope that an idea will fall on your lap and that your life will suddenly all fall into place. It is just a hunch I have but I don’t believe life works like that, or perhaps that it even should.

If you want new ideas then you have to think new ideas, if thinking what you have been hasn’t got you what you wanted up until now then that is something you need to change.

When you have an idea of something to do, it is best to follow your instincts and go with it. Even if it is not what you want to be doing in 5 years, it may well shed light on something that you would like to be doing in the future.

If you start to become passionate about doing something and follow it through, then this act alone may bring along its own rewards.

“It sometimes seems that intense desire creates not only its own opportunities but its own talents.”

If you are lost in your life and not sure what you want then something will always be better than nothing. Chose something and focus on it fully, don’t do it half hearted. Ask yourself what it is you want to happen from your new activity set some goals and outcomes, say for instance ‘in 3 months I want to have this’ or ‘in 6 months I want to have that’, and make sure you get it. Don’t stop until you achieve it.

Get involved in something, don’t be a drifter who is just letting life pass them by, go out, get busy, be somebody and start making something happen for yourself.

Possibilities

February 24th, 2008

Possibilities

When faced with uncertainty, it is sometimes looked upon as a negative to not know what you want, when people arrive at a crossroads in their lives, being unclear about what to do normally brings with it introspection and self doubt and more than likely a little concern about what the future will bring. But perhaps another way to look at this critical junction, is that it is a point in time when you have many potential avenues available to you that were not there before.

“At the point of uncertainty you are open to all possibilities.”

A time when instead of having no clue about what to do and consequently feeling apprehension about it, it becomes a time to look at a much bigger picture, a picture filled with numerous opportunities some of which you may never of considered before and probably would never consider if you were to stay on your current path. It is at these crossroads that anything is possible in your life. At these moments in your life you should not limit your choices but rather embrace all potential future scenarios as options for yourself.

Just because you don’t know what you want to do or are unsure what direction you want to take doesn’t automatically mean that it is something to feel bad about (or feel frustrated over).

When you arrive at a turning point in your life it is important you explore all options, it is not something trivial to be put to one side and re-evaluated at a later time. It is your life and it is important to spend time with any ideas or motives that you may have to do something different.

You have the potential of being anything you want. In today’s society there are more prospects than ever before to create a life for yourself that is truly unique to you. Today you can redefine you and your life in ways that 50 years ago were unheard of.

Technological advancements in our everyday lives and in terms of understanding the human mind provide us with ample opportunities to create change in our lives.

When you are uncertain about the road to travel down, remind yourself that your life is unique and that there is no correct path that works for everybody. We are all different and everybody faces difficult decisions about which direction to take at some point in their life. Just because you are faced with choices wherever you are or however old you are doesn’t matter, all that matters is that you see your situation in a positive light and investigate all options available.

Our choices provide us with a glimpse of ourselves standing in new surroundings; they are a chance for us to see ourselves in the future. They are a blueprint for what may be possible for us, a life that is not yet realized and what previously could not be foreseen.

Stories not yet told, experiences not yet fulfilled.

Do you ever look around and wonder what happened? We all realize hindsight is a beautiful thing but sometimes we lack the foresight to ever come up with new ideas.

The thing is there are new ideas all around, tomorrow something could be invented that will change the lives of people everywhere. Somebody once said years ago, that everything that needs to be invented has already been invented … Not quite.

Opportunities are everywhere around you, all you need to do is open your eyes. Instead of seeing nothing but roadblocks and barriers to stop you from getting what you want, be hopeful about the future and understand that any decision you make has potential to take you on a new journey in life.

There is a place for you in this world, a place for you to be the best you can be. When you find that person in you (who is aligned on all levels), one who is congruent with his / her values and skills in life, and who is doing what they really want in life, then nothing will stop you, your will and desire to succeed will be too strong for any obstacle.

Your ideal life won’t fall into your lap

November 16th, 2007

If you are creating any change in your life, it is important to understand that your changes will not suddenly appear overnight. It is also vitally important to not get discouraged when this doesn’t happen. And while it may be obvious to some the changes you want to happen will certainly not occur if you don’t put in any effort. It is easy sometimes to dismiss something as a non-starter in your own mind before any real concrete action has taken place, all too easy unfortunately.

Let’s assume you know what you want, you have written down your goals, and you know the changes would have a dramatic affect on your life for the better. It’s a great start but that is all it is. I have spoken about action before. But taking action doesn’t always guarantee results, you need constant, daily, never ending action.

Even by taking action you are still at the mercy of your thoughts, and any negative thoughts that you may have, can and will have a direct impact on your productivity. Everything from what you say to yourself, your behavior, and what you believe can potentially be a road block to your progress.

If you find yourself in a position where you have stopped working towards your goal (for whatever reason), then start again by making a daily plan of things that you need to do to get back on track.

For example, today I will do this ………….

It can be easy to live inside your head and know what you have to do, but not actually do anything about it in the real world. I find that I sometimes live in my head far too often, which ultimately results in not achieving very much.

Thinking too much can be a cause of great unhappiness, especially if it is negative. It can also prevent you from making inroads into what it is you are hoping to achieve.

Make a plan of what you need to do and stick to it. Don’t let interfering thoughts and negative feelings get in the way. Instead have faith in yourself, and believe that one day you will have what it is you are working towards.

Your ideal life won’t fall into your lap, you are going to have to work for it. Don’t expect it to just happen. If something is worth having, it is going to be worth the time and the effort it will take to get there.

Just remember that the constant and determined effort you put in each day will always bring you closer to where you want to be. By all means stop, reflect and congratulate yourself on the progress you have made but don’t stop and think negative thoughts that will stop you dead in your tracks, all this does is dismiss and negate all the work that you have already put in.

Poem by A J Cronin

November 1st, 2007

“Life is no straight and easy corridor along, which we travel free and unhampered, but a maze of passages, through which we must seek our way, lost and confused, now and again, checked in a blind alley. But always, if we have faith, a door will open for us, not perhaps one that we ourselves would have thought of, but one that will ultimately prove good for us.” - A. J. Cronin

A person who does

October 16th, 2007

Some ideas about taking action towards getting what you want in life. There are essentially 2 different types of people in the world, those that make something happen and those who watch other people make something happen. Make sure you are not the latter.

  • Be the person who turns an idea into something real.
  • Be the person who instead of thinking about what they need to do actually does it.
  • Be the person who rather than wait until next week or tomorrow does something today.
  • Be the person who understands that taking little steps is much better than taking no steps.
  • Be the person who understands that they will not fail but learn instead.
  • Be the person who knows they are the creators of their entire world.
  • Be the person who doesn’t complain about the things that aren’t in their life but rather makes a conscious effort to obtain what isn’t there.
  • Be the person that spends their time wisely on activities that will benefit themselves and others.
  • Be the person who believes in themselves, and their abilities.
  • Become the person who makes something happen in their life
